Digital images for altered arts, mixed media, collage and crafts

I have been a wizard of oz fan for years...ever since Dorthoy melted the wicked witch by throwing a bucket of soapy water on her! Any hoo.....I found some WofO images on Flickr that were listed under images free to copy for art work. Can anyone tell me if this is a copyright infringement? I am really excited to make some tags with the images if I can..Thanks, Jean

Hi Jean,

Firstly, I am sorry that it took me so long to answer you, but I have been on and off PDA in small time frames all week. Sigh, work and real life !!!! :)

The original story was written by L. Frank Baum in the early 1900's and was illustrated by W.W.Denslow (William Wallace Denslow)
AS far as I can tell this version would certainly be in the public domain and free to use in your art creations. Where you could run into copyright infringement, would be with the movie version created in 1939. So you are best to do serious research to find out if there is still a copyright.to any media related to the movie.

Here is a link to a huge research file done by wikipedia. There are a multitude of links and references, you will be lead on a wild goose chase that will probably still leave you wondering in the end.

Just keep in mind that any printed works and illustrations created in 1922 or earlier are now in public domain.

I hope this helps, and happy researching

Hi Jean,

I didnt see the link to the images you have posted til after I wrote my reply and I see that they are all images from the movie.

Here is another article I found that may further explain the copyright. At first it talks about Popeye and then explains better using the wizard of oz book vs movie as an example.

In my opinion, those images are still under copyright and really shouldnt be used. Perhaps for your own personal use would be okay but anything you would publish on the internet as well as here on PDA would be a copyright infringement.

Here is the Article

My motto is always : When in doubt do without!

Hope this helps
